Fun Facts Answer: Coatimundi

Coatimundi, or coati's for short, are a fun and curious part of the wildlife in the Riviera Maya.

They are known for their playful and mischievous behavior. Coatis are often spotted foraging in the jungle, rummaging through the leaves for food, or sometimes, if you leave your resort door open, inside your room stealing the snacks!

(Yes—I learned this the hard way!!😆)

Though they resemble a combination of a lemur, raccoon, and monkey, with possibly a bit of piglet thrown in, coatimundis are officially part of the raccoon family.

The name coatimundi is believed to come from the Tupian languages indigenous to South America. Their word, kua’ti, is a combination of “cua” meaning “belt” and “tim” meaning “nose,” describing the way the coati sleeps with its nose tucked into its belted tail.
